The Last Tree

History of the painting.

The creation of the painting "The Last Tree" was completed by the artist in 2021. Another significant event of 2021 was the retrospective of Amedeo Modigliani, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of his death, at the Albertina Museum in Vienna, "Modigliani - Picasso. The Revolution of Primitivism," from September 17, 2021, to January 9, 2022. And the preparation of the painting "The Last Tree" for the ART Climate Change exhibition | 13.09 - 8.10.2021 Novum Investments in Basel, Switzerland.

The painting "The Last Tree" is a symbol of indomitable vitality. Here is what Anatoli Gostev said about the painting on his author's website, Gostev's Fine Art:

More than a quarter of a century ago, in the dead of winter, I was driving home in my car. On either side stretched a dense forest with snow-covered trees, frozen solid in a continuous, icy mass. The car emerged at the edge of the forest, and suddenly the headlights illuminated a moonlit, surreal clearing with a lonely tree, as if sinking into the meaninglessness of solitude and chilling emptiness. I asked the driver to stop, and I walked on the crunching snow towards the Tree.

You see, the trees in the forest were together, as if supporting each other in this chilling struggle. The Tree on the clearing survived, as if thanks to some inner superpower, so incomprehensible that it cannot be expressed in words. I had to start painting a picture. A picture with the Tree on it, which for many years has made me marvel at its power and tempted me to change the details of the painting.

Somewhere far away, on the clearing, on the edge of the forest, my favorite Tree ages alone every winter. I go to the studio, mix white with ultramarine and make a brushstroke with a palette knife. I know for sure that there will be no trace of the surrounding forest, but this Tree will live forever.
